NSW Upper House Orders an Inquiry Into Repealing the Minns Gun Laws
The New South Wales Legislative Council agreed Oct. 20 to an inquiry into the Firearms Legislation Amendment (Reforms Repeal) Bill 2026, Shooters, Fishers and Farmers MLC Mark Banasiak's bill to undo the gun laws passed after last December's Bondi attack, Sporting Shooter reported. Portfolio Committee No. 5 can take written submissions and hold hearings, and must report by Feb. 15, 2027, weeks before the March 2027 state election; the inquiry does not suspend the current laws. Sporting Shooter, a shooters' publication, reports that the Liberal opposition, which supported the original laws, backed the inquiry, and that the SFF wants Premier Chris Minns to pause the buyback until the committee reports. The government's response was not reported.
NSW gun dealers can apply from Nov. 2 for the state's industry support package, grants of up to A$25,000 plus A$500 in licence fee relief, and can also put their losses into written submissions to the inquiry before its Feb. 15, 2027 deadline. A dealer that records its sales and staffing since the laws took effect is building the evidence file the committee will have in front of it.
